Root Bridges - Eco Construction in India | Chad Peterson

Root Bridges – Eco Construction in India

You Read that right, in Northeast India in a place called Cherrapunji. In Cherrapunji, India are bridges made of living tree root systems. Some of these fascinating examples of eco construction are estimated at over 500 years old.  Do not take my word for it check out the photos below.

These amazing living bridges are made using roots of the Ficus elastica  sometimes called a rubber tree.  The rubber tree grows secondary roots from branches allowing for the innovative Indian constructors to guide the roots as they grow to form a living bridge.  It takes 10- 20 years to fully grow a bridge like this.  Awesome cool stuff right?

Share it on your favorite social media site and spread the news.
